Here are a few of the tools we use to help your child learn to read by decoding:
Eagle Eye
Look at the picture for clues.
Lips the Fish
Say the first sound of the new word.
Stretchy Snake
Stretch the word out slowly.
Put the sounds together.
Chunky Monkey
Look for a chunk that you know (at in cat).
Look for a word part (-ing, -er).
Flippy Dophin
Switch the vowel sound. If the short vowel sound does not work, try the long vowel sound to decode the word.
Skippy Frog
Skip the word. Read to the end of the sentence. Hop back and read it again.
Tryin Lion
Try to reread the sentence. Try a word that makes sense.
Decoding Strategies
In kindergarten we really work on learning our sight words or high frequency words. These are words that students need to be able to read quickly by sight. Sight words area key component in helping students learn to read. Sight words make up more than 50% of everyday reading material! Here is the list of kindergarten sight words. We want students knowing 92 or more sight words by the end of kindergarten!
